I had a wonderful weekend. Every year the authors of Schiffer Publishing are invited to their complex for their annual picnic. I went down on Friday to attend some of the workshop/seminars. Saturday was the actual picnic.
Ferol Humphrey joined me as my guest. We left Friday morning for the three hour drive from New York to Atglen Pennsylvania. The drive went quick, we had great conversations, some of which was streamed live on Periscope (after our stop at Chipotle for lunch).
Went made it to Schiffer I was taken back by the beauty of the property. It is serene and tranquil. Way better than my view of Northern Blvd in Queens. I made it on time for the marketing and sales seminars. Inside I found a table with my name tag and the title of my book. I quickly scanned the table to see if any other Mind/Body/Spirit authors were here. I was happy to see there were some. The marketing seminars were helpful and I am doing some research using the advice they gave. I finally met the Schiffer Family, Pete Schiffer himself, president of the company. I also met my editor Dinah Roseberry, she showed me the library and her office, which comes fully loaded with a Ouija board!
I met Emily Klintworth, an Astrologer who is working on an Astrology book.I also met the two women (I recall one is Sarah Baldwin, I apologize, the other woman’s name escapes me, very sorry) who are creating an herbal deck. I also met a gentleman named Alexander Teixeira, who is also working on a deck based on the Book of Psalms!
That night Ferol and I drove to Lancaster to have Tai dinner with the Carrahers, Jon and Kyra. Jon is the artist working on the deck we are collaborating on. Dinner was excellent and the company was great. Ferol gave Jon and Kyra readings when we were done. Jon brought with him the paintings of the two finished cards he created, The Tower and Death. I would be bringing these to Schiffer to show them off.
Saturday morning, waking early Ferol and I had a delicious breakfast buffet across from our motel. Lord was there a lot of food! A quick nap and after check out, we headed to Schiffer for the picnic. I got to show the tarot cards Jon created to the Schiffer staff and they loved it.
Dinah took a group of us on a tour of the whole complex. We went through the warehouse where the store every book! Every book they publish is always in print and on hand, always. As you can see from my photo (just one area of the warehouse mind you) there are a lot of book! I had the urge to never leave, I could live in the warehouse, no one would know! I also walked around the grounds on my own to admire all the sculptures that the Schiffer family has collected over the years. It is a beautiful collection. Later in the afternoon while hanging around Ferol and I met George Kalajian of International Pleating (NYC).
It was a great experience, the Schiffer family is amazingly warm, friendly and welcoming. Seeing first hand the operations and seeing how large scale, they are is impressive. I was able to see how vast and wide Schiffer is involved in with publishing. Mind/Body/Spirit is a recent addition to their company, it gives me perspective.
In the end, I am proud to say that I am a Schiffer author. It is exciting and thrilling to work the people at Schiffer. This gives me a renewed energy and overall motivation. I hope to have a long lasting relationship with them. See you next year!
